Slay the Party is a fast-paced multiplayer board game created as a solo developer, blending the strategic depth of tabletop RPGs with the accessibility of party games. Set on a looping board, players choose unique classes, roll dice to navigate creature-filled squares, and engage in quick combat. Inspired by Monopoly and Dungeons & Dragons, it combines resource management, ability upgrades, and rival elimination in a competitive race to be the last standing. Perfect for friend groups and streamers, it delivers exciting gameplay in online, local, or single-player modes.

Early Design Test

My ideation process began on paper, where I sketched an example game board and simulated gameplay using tabletop equipment I had on hand. This approach enabled quick brainstorming and testing with minimal time and effort, serving as an efficient foundation before transitioning to a more detailed and fully developed design. (Please ignore my terrible handwriting :D)

Core Gameplay Loop

This diagram illustrates the core gameplay loop. The goal is to encourage strategic decision-making through meaningful choices at every stage while dice rolls create unpredictability, keeping each turn dynamic. Creature encounters offer a risk-reward balance: escaping avoids danger but forfeits rewards, while fighting enables progression at the cost of vulnerability.

Gold and experience incentivize engagement. Experience unlocks skill upgrades for tactical investments, while gold increases damage output. These systems ensure players feel a sense of progression and agency.

Limited skill use and mana add strategic depth and careful planning. The starting square act as reset points, letting players recover and re-enter the loop without being over-punished.

Turn Flow

This diagram illustrates the turn flow.
1. At the start of their turn, each player rolls a d12 to determine their movement on the game board.
2. Before interacting with the square they land on, players may use one Quick Skill, if available.
3. The type of square determines the interaction. Regardless of the square type, every interaction is followed by the Skill Phase when completed.
4. During the Skill Phase, the player can use one Regular Skill or one Quick Skill (if another Quick Skill hasn't been used earlier in the turn.) and one Regular Skill. After using their skills, the turn ends, and play passes to the next player.
5. If the player defeats a creature and earns enough XP to level up, they immediately upgrade one of their skills before ending their turn.
